February 13th 1976 Coup
When Lt. Col. Bukar Dimka of the Nigeria Army Physical Training Corps stepped out of his official residence on Macpherson Road, Ikoyi, in the early hours of February 13, 1976, he had one agenda in mind; the killing of the then Head of State, Gen. Murtala Muhammed.
He achieved that criminal act by gunning down the Kano-born head of state a few minutes after the latter left the Dodan Barracks, Obalende, the official seat of the Federal Military Government at the time.
Muhammed’s official black Mercedes Benz was riddled with bullets near a petrol station on Bank Road, (now Murtala Muhammed Drive) opposite the Federal Secretariat, Ikoyi. Killed along with him were, his ADC, Lt. Akintunde Akinsehinwa and driver.
After the assassination, Dimka had made a broadcast at the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) studio in the following words;
‘’Good morning fellow Nigerians, This is Lt. Col. B. Dimka of the Nigerian Army calling.
I bring you good tidings. Murtala Muhammed’s deficiency has been detected. His government is now overthrown by the young revolutionaries. Any attempt to foil these plans from any quarters will be met with death.
Everyone should be calm. Please stay by your radio for further announcements. All borders, air and sea ports are closed until further notice. Curfew is imposed from 6am to 6pm. Thank you. We are all together.”
Two days after Muhammed was assassinated, Dimka was declared wanted for treason and murder by military authorities. He was eventually caught at a checkpoint at Abakaliki on March 5, 1976 and brought to Lagos the following day.
On March 6, 1976, the Federal Government promptly issued a statement on his arrest as follows: ‘’His arrest followed a massive manhunt operation mounted by a combined team of the Army and Police in the area.
‘’The previous day, Lt. Col Dimka had checked in at a local hotel in Afikpo under the name of Mr. C. Godwin of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Enugu. Later, on his request, the hotel manager secured for him a girl, Miss. Beatrice Agboli, with whom to spend the night.
‘’A few hours later, the local Police security was alerted and they closed up on him. At about 10.30 pm, he bolted away through the window of the toilet of his hotel room into a nearby thick bush, abandoning his car with a dangling registration number ECC 6253.”
‘’The continuous joint manhunt operation by the Army and Police resulted in his subsequent arrest near Abakaliki.’’
Barely few hours after he was brought to Lagos, he was interrogated by the military Board of Inquiry led by Major Gen. E. O. Abisoye.
However while Dimka was being quizzed, 32 people including Major Gen. Illiya Bisalla, who had already been tried for their roles in the attempted coup were executed in Lagos on March 11, 1976.
The only civilian executed among them was Abdulkarim Zakari, a graduate of University of Ibadan, who was said to have led Dimka and others into the studios of the NBC on February 13, 1976. The broadcaster was also cited as the man who signed for martial music records from the NBC library the previous night.
Just as the first batch of coup plotters were executed, Dimka’s trial begun after he was presented to the press on March 11, 1976.
Handcuffed, Dimka who wore a katftan dress watched journalists listen to a tape recording of his appearance before the board of inquiry for about five minutes. He confirmed that the voice on the tape was his own and that it was a recording made at his interrogation. He emphasised that the statement was not made under duress.
According to a Daily Times publication, ‘’13 Years of Military Rule 1966-79’’ the highlights of Dimka’s confessional statements included, ‘’Frankly speaking, I should say the beginning of the coup idea was around January this year (1976).’’
He said he had discussions with some persons including former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon in London and when he returned to the country, he decided to assign responsibilities to members of the young revolutionaries conscripted into the plan.
But Gowon, who was in exile at the time denied any prior knowledge of the coup attempt.
Dimka also claimed the coup plot was hatched by young officers who resolved not to involve any Lieutenant Colonel and above except himself in a bid to effect a change of government.
In his confessional statement, he said, Gen. Bisalla had complained to him and expressed his frustration that despite being a member of the Supreme Military Council (SMC), each time there was a decision to be taken, he was either sent to one place or the other.
Dimka said ‘’ Bisalla told me that whatever will happen he want us to go ahead, and work out the details.’’
Explaining how responsibilities were distributed, the leader of the coup plot said ‘’ When I met Major Rabo, he said that he had finally distributed responsibilities. Major Rabo was for target one- Head of State, Lt. Dauda was for target two- Lt. Gen. Obasanjo, Lawrence Garba was for target three- Lt. Gen. Danjuma.
‘’Major Gagara was for Ilorin and Sokoto, Jos had nobody. The main centres of operations were Kaduna, Ibadan, Benin where there are Radio stations’’.
He also listed the targets of attack, that is, those to be eliminated as the Head of State, the four GOCs, Col. Babangida, Col. Bajowa, Col. Mohammed of Sokoto, Col. Ibrahim Taiwo of Kwara, Col. Abdullahi of Jos and Col. Jemibewon of Ibadan.’’
Dimka also confessed before the military board of inquiry how Zakari showed him the NBC broadcasting section on February 12, a day before the coup attempt.
On how the ex-Head of State was killed, he said ‘’ I stood at George Street with Major Rabo to wait until such a time when the Head of State’s car was coming out. There, one Capt. Malaki who was to give the warning order. Capt. Malaki was to be on the watch to signal Major Rabo and Lt. William Seri on the approach of the vehicle. So I came up and I was at the petrol station waiting.
‘’I was behind while we were talking when the Commander –in-Chief’s car passed. In fact, I did not even see it until when Malaki said the car has passed. So, we rushed in and then followed and the car was held somewhere just opposite the petrol station.
‘’Lt. Seri was approaching the car when we stopped and Major Rabo rushed to him, then the firing started. ‘’
Dimka confessed that after the Head of State was assassinated, he went to the NBC and made his broadcast that the young revolutionaries had taken over the government.
At the end of his trial, coup leader and a number of others were found guilty of treason and murder. Their death sentences were confirmed by the Supreme Military Council.
Dimka and seven others were eventually executed by firing squad at Kirikiri Prisons on May 15, 1976, for their part in the abortive coup. Also executed among the squad was the former Governor of the then Benue Plateau State, Joseph Gomwalk.
However, two NCOs, Sgt. Clement Yildar and Corporal Dauda Usman escaped and were never found. They were declared wanted by the authorities.
The situation led to the promulgation by Olusegun Obasanjo regime of certain retrospective decrees and new military laws justifying mass executions for coup participation.

Fellow Nigerians,
This is Lt. Col. BS Dimka. I now explain why we the Young Revolutionaries of the Armed Forces have found it necessary to overthrow the six month old government of Murtala. On the 29th July 1975 the Government of General Gowon was overthrown. Some of the reasons given for the change were:
a. Corruption
b. Indecision
c. Arrest and detention without trial
d. Weakness on the part of the Head of State
e. Maladministration in general and a host of other malpractice.
Every honest Nigerian will agree with me that since the change over of government there has not been any physical development in the whole country generally.
All we have is arbitrary dismissal of innocent Nigerians who have contributed in no less amount to the building of this great nation.
A Professor was arrested, detained, dismissed and later taken to court on an article which every honest Nigerian will agree that all the points contained in that article were 100% truth.
The sad point about it all is that those who initiated the retirement or dismissal exercise are the worst offenders.
You will be informed about the ill-gotten wealth in my next announcement.
The acting General Manager of the Nigerian Airways was invited to the Dodan Barracks and detained without trial.
The people of this country have been living in a state of fear.
The Armed Forces promotion exercise is still fresh in your minds.
Whatever reasons they have for the promotion one can only say that they are ambitious.
They in fact took over power to enrich themselves.
We are convinced that some of the programmes announced for a return to civilian rule are made to favor a particular group.
To mention only one. Maitama Sule is a politician. But has been appointed Chief of Commissioners for Complaints.
This is to prepare him for the next political head at all cost.
How many of you know that Maitama Sule is on a salary of N17,000 p.a.?
In view of what I have just said and a lot more which time will not permit me to mention, we the Young Revolutionaries have once again taken over the Government to save Murtala from total disgrace and prevent him from committing further blunders and totally collapsing the country before he runs away in the name of retirement to enjoy the huge fortune he got through bribe which he has now stored outside this country.
I believe that charity should begin at home.
Please stay by your radio for further announcements.
We are all together.

DARE TO SET A GOAL
In 1960, President J.F. Kennedy of the United States called together scientists, head of airlines and engineers and gave them an assignment; land an American on the moon in the next ten years. Nobody had done it before. How they would do it nobody knew. All they had was a goal and a promise of all they would need. They beat their target by one year and landed someone in the moon by 1969.
Dare to set a goal; how to achieve it is not the problem. The way God designed life is for you to decide what you want. Many people do not set goals because they do not know how they are going to get provision. But that is not the way it works. The style is to decide what you want and then God will supply the ‘how’ to get it.
I want us to go into practical dimensions of planning.
The major part to planning is to write it down. We must cultivate the habit of writing. When we pray, meditate and plan, a biro and writing material are compulsory. At this time, ideas will flow but if they are not written down they fly. We use the biro and writing material to capture, put them down and turn them into reality in our lives. We must cultivate the writing habit. It is too crucial and important. The shortest pencil is better than the longest memory.
3 Things Planning Helps Us Do.
Planning helps us define our direction. There are always so many options opened but when you sit down to plan, you are able to define accurately where you want to go.Planning increases our personal efficiency by cultivating principles and habits that move us towards greatness on a daily basis. It helps us identify our strengths and weakness. When we sit down to analyze how far we have come, suddenly we realize there are some things that have worked. In planning, I have realized that one needs to deal with one’s weakness. I am an idealist. I always plan on ideal circumstances and the ideal circumstances are usually not realistic.Planning helps us build self-confidence. When we begin to achieve our goals, it envelops our self-image and self-esteem. This gives us the confidence to confront bigger issues; it moves us forward. One other characteristic of planning is that it is continuous. When we make plans, we need to ensure they are flexible. It is not like a neurotic surgeon that the plan must be fulfilled to the letter.
Benefits of Goals.
1) Goals improve our self-image because we have a sense of accomplishment on a daily basis. Every day I write the things I want to accomplish during the day. I mark them as the day goes by. It gives me tremendous fulfillment to know that I have spent my time on something worthwhile during the day. By the time one adds much accomplishment on a daily basis for 365 days, one would have made tremendous progress in life.
2) Goals make one aware of one’s strength.
3) Goals make one aware of one’s weakness.
4) Past victories motivate for present success.
5) Written goals help to visualize and actualize success. That is the best way to recapture it. It is the first step towards actualizing our dream.
6) Goals force us to set priorities. Usually, the thing one wants to accomplish is more than time will permit, so we have to prioritize. Some of us spend time on things that we think are urgent but are not important. They do not give us any serious movement in life. We usually spend our time on such things but when we sit to plan we identify the things that are most crucial to our success in life.
7) Goals make us responsible for our own success. The starting point for success is taking personal responsibility.
8) Goals serve as a criteria for decision-making. When you have to make a decision, usually what makes it easy for you to make a decision are policies and standards that you have set for yourself before-hand. For example, if you have a personal policy of no personal overdraft from the bank, when you need money, you will consider other means of getting the money but an overdraft from the bank will not be an option.
Before one sets goals, one needs to write down personal affirmations.
I call mine – My Success Creed. In this, I wrote down everything I want to become in life. It is placed next to my bed; I see it every day. It encompasses every area of my life. It is important that you write it and read it to yourself every day. When you write your personal affirmation, do not write it in future tense. Do not say, “I will become,” say, “I am.” A number of questions will help you in writing your personal affirmation statements and they are:
a) How can I achieve peace of mind?
b) What sort of work will I do?
c) How much do I want to earn?
d) What will I do for pleasure?
e) What kind of vacation do I want to go for?
f) What quality of knowledge do I want to acquire?
After writing your personal affirmation, it is important to analyse where you are right now, because it is difficult to accurately decide where you are going if you cannot analyse where you are. For me, a normal routine is what I call personal realization project which I carry out once in 6 months. There I write in a dairy, ‘Where I am coming from’, ‘Where I am now’, ‘Where I am going.’ A number of questions will help to determine the answers to these questions and they are:
a) Is my present situation satisfactory or unsatisfactory?
b) What makes my present situation unsatisfactory or satisfactory?
c) How can I change my present situation?
d) Do I live a balanced life?
e) Am I straightforward and honest with myself?
Dimensions To Goals.
1) Short Range Goals: include daily, weekly, and yearly goals.
2) Medium Range Goals: five-year goals.
3) Long Range Goals: ten years and above.
Five Goal Areas
The goal should cover five areas of our lives. We should set
I. Spiritual Goals: Where can you go to receive spiritual growth? If you do not have goals concerning your spiritual life, you can go to any bible-based church. Where can I go to engage in spiritually stimulating activities? Which unit should I join? Is your spiritual life balanced? Is your family included in your spiritual plans? Do you read and study the bible? Have you planned your quite time? How long do you want to spend praying? How can you make a spiritual contribution of lasting value? In one year’s time where will you be in your church? How are you going to help others?
II. Social Goals: How many phone calls or text messages will you send to friends and family members? Will you visit? Do you write letters? Do you attend ceremonies of people who are crucial to you? Do you remember people’s birthday? Do you send birthday cards? Do you send wedding gifts?
III. Financial Goals: How much money do you want to earn per year? How much money are you going to save? How much are you going to give to worthwhile causes? When do you want to retire? How much income do you want to get when you retire? What kind of work do you want to do for the rest of your life? Do you abuse the use of overdraft facilities? Do you have a realist budget for your family? What will be your net worth five years from now? Do you possess financial balance or is your account always not balanced?
IV. Recreational Goals: Do you have a personal fitness program? Do you enjoy personal recreation? Do you plan time for family recreation? Do you take vacations? Do you do things that create mental relaxation? Do you have regular schedules and medical checkups? Do you really want to be physically and mentally fit? Are you living a recreationally balanced life?
V. Educational goals: Are you setting goals for your children? Will you quit reading literary junk? When will you stop reading things that do not contribute to your destiny? Do you have a daily time for study? Are you going to achieve great wisdom? Do you know all there is to know about your work? Will you share your knowledge with others? Can you force yourself to become a student? Do you possess educational balance in your life?
What you will find out is that as you write all this goals down, you change even on paper before you stand up to do anything. You experience a powerful internal change and this will provoke a powerful external change in your life.
I have found out that planning is building character in me. Goal setting builds your character. Most people are fantastic dreamers but are not realistic. “I wish I have one million naira.” But how do you get that money? It is when you sit down that you find out that you can only get N250,000. So leave the one million alone and plan with the N250,000. This is character and being sincere and honest with yourself. As you are changing inside, life will be changing towards you.

CHIEF MICHAEL ADEKUNLE AJASIN
Late Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin, 1st Executive Governor of Ondo State
CHIEF MICHAEL ADEKUNLE AJAS1N, Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR), BA (Durham) Dip. Ed (London), DCL (Sierra Leone) LLD (OSU), LLD (FUTA), Teacher, Headmaster, Principal of Imade College, Owo, Proprietor and Principal of Owo High School, Councilor, Council Chairman. Member of the Federal House of Representatives, Governor of old Ondo State, the Asiwaju of Owo, Leader of the Yorubas, Chairman and Leader of Afenifere, Peoples Consultative Forum and National Democratic Coalition was bom in Owo to Peter and Deborah Ajasin on November 28, 1908. The eldest of five children, two of whom survived him - Mrs Rachael Morenike Ojomo and Mrs Mary Ajibola Aiyegbusi.
Education and Early Life
He attended St. James's School, Owo, St. Paul's (later Oloyede Memorial School) and entered St. Andrew's College, Oyo in 1923. He passed out of the College in December 1927 following a brilliant and enviable record. The CMS authority (who were his sponsor) subsequently posted him first to St. Andrew's School, Warri and later to St. Luke's School, Sapele, where he remained as Headmaster until 1943 when he left for Fourah Bay College, Freetown, Sierra Leone in the heat of the second World War. He graduated in July 1946 and proceeded to the University of London for a Post Graduate Diploma in Education.
He returned to Owo in 1947 to become the Principal of Imade College, (a member of the Aionian Group of Schools) and one of the best schools in Western Nigeria, where he stamped his personality of high discipline, hard work, athletic disposition and academic brilliance on the thousands of pupils who passed through him and who are leaders in the Country today. He founded Owo High School in 1963 and within a short span of time the school has also produced a number of highly placed Nigerians in various spheres of endeavour.
Politics and Public Service
All his life, he was involved in political affairs of the people. Even from far away Sapele, he made his influence felt in the political affairs of Owo. He was by his education and experience, the obvious choice to represent Owo in the different constitutional conferences before independence. The Action Group (a Political Party which revolutionized the old Western Nigeria) of which he was Vice President was officially founded and launched in his home at Owo.
For a very long time in Owo, his political leadership was undisputed. He paid his dues in politics - rising from the lowest rank. He ran and won election as a ward Councilor, District Council Chairman, Divisional Council Chairman, Federal Legislator and Governor of the old Ondo State (an election in which he won the highest percentage of votes in the gubernatorial elections throughout the whole country in 1979). He was referred to as the 'Millionaire Governor' as a result of his feat of being the only governor to record votes of over one million. In 1962 he became the President of Egbe Omo Oduduwa and with the passing of Chief Obafemi Awolowo in 1987, the leadership of Awo's political family naturally fell on him. The unfolding transition program of General Ibrahim Babangida saw him become the rallying point for progressive political forces in Nigeria which culminated in the victory of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the Presidential Elections of 1993 - an election that has been acclaimed as the freest and fairest in the history of Nigeria.
It was the annulment of the election which brought out the best in him politically, for since June 1993, he became the arrow head of opposition to the nullification of the election and thereafter worked relentlessly for an early enthronement of democratic civilian rule as practiced in all civilized countries.
"Despite his old age, and sometimes ailing health, he continued to attend various meetings with the hope of finding a peaceful resolution to the political impasse. He dialogued with Nigeria's Head of State, General Sanni Abacha a couple of times; convened the first ever summit of Politicians in December of 1995 - all in an effort to find a just solution to Nigeria's problems. It was during one of the preliminary preparatory meetings for the Summit that he took ill and Dr. Alex Ekwueme had to take the chair.
While alive, his home in Owo became virtually a Mecca for leaders of all shades of political opinion in Nigeria as well as many dignitaries and diplomatic representatives of foreign countries. He welcomed friend and ‘foe’ alike.
Life Style
Chief Ajasin had an indomitable spirit, engaging in battle to uphold justice and defend the rights of the oppressed. Although born with royal blood in his veins, he was throughout his political life always espousing the cause of the ordinary people. He demonstrated in both his public and private life a high sense of probity and accountability which is difficult to beat. His whole life is a struggle for a better Nigeria using in particular education for his crusade. He was a humble and modest man - As aptly put by Chief Anthony Enahoro -
"He had the singular virtue of modesty, even humility. He never boasted about the historic fact that he was the undeniable architect of the free education which transformed the old Western region and became a shining example for other parts of the country".
He was a democrat to the core - never one to take decisions without consulting his followers. Once a decision was reached, he carried it out with utmost vigour. He was never known to relent. He was very loyal and dependable. He respected authority. Through thick and thin, he maintained an unflinching loyalty to the leadership of Chief Obafemi Awolowo both in the Action Group and the Unity Party of Nigeria. He never coveted any position - All positions and achievements he attained came to him naturally. It is no wonder that his leadership equally commanded so much respect and loyalty from his teeming followers.
He was a workaholic. Even at the age of Seventy-one when he became governor he brought an unmistakable dynamism of a much younger person to bear on governance of Ondo State. This is attested by the various achievements of his administration in the fields of Education, industrialization and rural development during his tenure as governor of the State.
He was honest to a fault - He led his life by showing good examples, he was not one to say do as I say and not as I do. Rather, he practiced what he preached. He was a highly disciplined and principled man. He was simple and lived a Spartan life. He 'stubbornly' pursued any cause for which he believed and was convinced to be right and just. He was very consistent. He had a very unselfish attitude to life. While the golden rule says do unto others as you would wish they do to you; He did more for others than he ever wished done for himself. He lived a life of selfless service to humanity and he was a source of inspiration to all who came across him. His doors were always open to everyone at anytime of the day or night, even despite the protocol at Government House, he never turned back any visitor no matter how 'small'. We can go on and on - but suffice it to say that the story of his life is that of an uncommon man.
It can be truly said of Chief Ajasin
"By Jove I am not covetous for gold, Nor care I who doth feed upon my cost. It yearns me not if men my garment wear, such outward things dwell not in my desire, but if it is sin to covet honour, I am the most offending soul alive "
- Shakespeare
Family Life
He was happily married to Babafunke (nee Tenabe). The marriage took place at Ido-Ani on Thursday, 12th January l939 - at the Holy Trinity Church. Barely a fortnight after the wedding Papa remarked in a letter to his uncle "Comfort is doing well she has started to show that she will be a dutiful wife and one that will make me happy". After fifty eight years of marriage it will be difficult to find a couple who can beat the record of happiness, faithfulness, respect and loyalty to each other as he and his wife. It was hoped that he would live a couple of more years to celebrate their diamond jubilee. He in his memoirs described his wife as
‘not only a jewel, she is the priceless jewel of my soul. She is not just the woman behind the successful man, she is the soul of the man’
Hear what General Babangida had to say about him.
"As a husband and father, he personified the dignity and sanctity of marriage and family life as a lifelong institution"
Chief and Mrs. Ajasin are blessed with four children, Modebola, Waleola, Olatokunbo and Olajumoke.
Trials and Tribulations
His life was not all a bed of roses, even though he attained the peak of his career in all its ramification, he had his own share of problems, starting with - the political turmoil of the old Western Nigeria during which time, the Action Group and its leadership were subjected to all sorts of persecution.
There was the conflict at Owo arising from the disaffection between him and the Olowo of Owo which unfortunately lingered on for so long to the detriment of Owo Community. What about the disloyalty within his party - the Unity Party of Nigeria during which his deputy played a disappointing major role. Unfortunately this led to the rigging of the gubernatorial election and the consequent conflagration which resulted in the loss of lives and property in Ondo State. We cannot end his tribulations without reference to the unjust treatment visited on him by the military. Contrary to all codes of human decency and natural justice which presumes that a person is innocent until proved guilty; the military government of General Buhari incarcerated him on the presumption of guilt while asking him to prove his innocence. He was tried thrice and thrice he was discharged and acquitted yet he was not released until General Babangida freed him 20 months later.
Inspite of his old age and ailing health, he was subjected to all forms of discomfort and stress, through detention, threats and harassment. Through all the trials and tribulations, he was undaunted, pursuing his goals with all the resilience, consistency, determination and belief in God.
It has been said of him that
"He ran a very long race, neither did he fall nor stumble, when he has run his own part of the race and finished tops and we (Nigerians) would not do our part, he took the baton again and led the way".
The Guardian, Oct. 10, 1997
To those who could be discouraged by obstacles to good life and democracy in Nigeria - those who would rather join them because they cannot beat them, the life of Chief Ajasin should serve as a shinning example for which the following quotation truly and aptly applies;
"Some say that the age of chivalry is past, the age of chivalry is never past, so long as there is a wrong left unredressed on earth, or a man or woman left to say, ‘I will redress that wrong, or spend my life in the attempt,' The age of chivalry is never past, so long as we have faith enough to say, 'God will help me to redress that wrong; or, if not me, He will help those that come after me, for His eternal Will is to overcome evil with good". - C. Kingsley
Honours
During his life, Chief Ajasin had a number of honours conferred on him. He was conferred with the third highest honour of the Federal Republic of Nigeria - Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) in 1982 by President Shehu Shagari, a proud alma mater, Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, made its distinguished alumnus as Doctor of Civil Laws (Honoris Causa); a grateful Ondo State University honoured itself by bestowing on its founder the degree of Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa): and an admiring Federal University of Technology, Akure recognized this great man's worth with another Honorary Doctorate of Laws. He was a Honorary Fellow of Ondo State College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti.
He was also honoured with several chieftaincy titles, among which are: Asiwaju of Owo, Owosoyin of Ijero Ekiti, Adingbuwa of Ondo, and Obarimiyo of Akure.
Papa lives on as Bankole Anifowoshe, one of his grandsons put it "Papa will never die".
